Brass Pipe Nipples - Types and its Importance in Plumbing World

Pipes are responsible for carrying water from tanks to different parts of premises. They are one the most important component in plumbing process without which the whole process is meaningless. But pipe itself doesn't has any importance till they are supported by other plumbing parts such as brass pipe nipples, brass T's, bushes, elbows and etc.

What Are Brass Pipe Nipples?

It is human nature that it sometimes neglects the importance of small parts as they play the supporting roles and tends to appreciate main role players. Same logic applies for brass pipe nipples as they play the supporting role and ensure constant flow of water through pipes. They are of two ends each threaded to fix with the unthreaded pipe fittings.

With brass being the basic component in manufacturing of brass pipe nipples the manufacturers are now coming with more attractive and efficient products as they are now available with silver and nickel polishing. These brass pipe nipples look catchy and suit the expensive bathroom upholstery. Initially they used to come with brass finish which used to look raw and unfinished. They were just rubbed with the saw dust so that to make them smooth.

Brass pipe nipples mainly work as the joint between the brass pipes as it has two ends both machine twirled from either side so that pipe ends can be fixed with them, for further gripping plumbing threads are used so that the joint become stronger and the chance of leakage become null. You just need a good quality plumbing wrench to tighten the pipe nipples with brass pipes.

Why Brass Parts?

Brass as many of us know is one of the toughest metals. Its strongness makes any part made of brass durable. Brass parts in plumbing not only assure proper fittings but also assures of its longevity and durability.

In comparison to other pipe fittings brass fittings are considered to be the toughest. Although they are expensive comparatively but at least you are assures of the quality it provides. Brass is one of the toughest metals and its durability and non-corrosive feature makes it perfect for plumbing process.  Water coming into our water tanks contains ammonia, lead and zinc and they are enough for harming pipe fittings but brass ability of being corrosion free doesn't let these chemicals to harm the fittings.

Brass's ability of being heat resistant also allows brass pipe nipples to work in fluent manner as the flow of hot water don't effect on brass as it can bear temperature from 50 degree to 100 degrees. It is always better to use quality parts on the first hand only so that you don't need to get them replaced with time. As sub-standard parts might be available on cheaper rates but finally they will prove to be costlier as they need high maintenance and periodical replacements.

Further brass parts are available with complete kit and you don't need to assemble different plumbing parts. Therefore one should always keep in consideration the use and budget before selecting plumbing parts.

Use Of Brass Pipe Nipples In Plumbing And Piping

What Is Plumbing?

The word plumbing comes from the Latin word Plumbum for lead. This is because the first plumbing apparatus used during the Roman Era were made of lead. Plumbing is any system that is responsible for conveying fluids over large distances. This is done for a large number of applications.

Threaded Inserts Manufacturers Guide To Restore Damaged Threads

If your car threaded inserts are little damaged, you can get them repair and restore. Threaded inserts manufacturers explain how to fix the damage and restore them in good condition with fewer efforts.

If your threads are not completely worn, you can try chasing them with a thread chasing tap. The chasing will help you in realigning the threads through which you can thread the bolt in place. A thread chaser is an undersized tap that cleans threads without removing the metal.

If the thread is severely damaged and cannot be saved with a thread chaser, you can entirely store the threads using new coil-type thread inserts. They will offer a comprehensive new threaded hole that accepts the genuine size bolt.

You can install them by drilling the damaged thread hole bit oversize, tap it using a larger taping device, and screw inside the new threaded insert coil.

You Can Rely On Two Methods To Install Threaded Inserts

  • Thermal
  • Ultrasonic
However, both are not only used as methods, but can be pressed in, molded, in and even screwed in through self-tapping threads. However, threaded inserts installation method after molding lowers the cost by reducing the molding time. It also lowers the chance of scrap and mold damage resulting from dislodged inserts.

When you consider both the methods, you can embed the insert into a molded or drilled hole by melting the plastic again.

Why You Need To Install Thread Repair Inserts?

Everything on your automotive is held together with fasteners. Whenever you unbolt something and fix it back together, you stand a chance of cross-threading or stripping the threads.

You can repair most threaded inserts that make the threads stronger than those used in cast iron or aluminum parts. Threaded inserts manufacturers recommend proper repairing of damaged threads in order to tighten the fasteners properly and keep the connection stronger.

Professionals use these tools - electric drill, drills, cutting oil, tap handle, shop rags, hand tools, compressed air source, and tap alignment block.

Why To Choose The Brass Pipe Nipple?

Plumbing demands a variety of fittings and a wide range of equipment for its customized needs and specifications. Pipes, connectors, junctions, wedges fittings are commonly used. For some special purposes we use specific connectors designed and wire-framed accordingly. One such connector is the nipple.

Nipple

Nipple has a very short pipe with a male pipe thread at both the ends. This fitting is used as a connection between two pipes. The pipe length of the nipple is the minimum possible length practically possible for that fitting. This is the reason, the length of a nipple is generally specified as the number of linings it has at both the ends.

Nipples are of two types: pipe nipple and the close nipple.

Pipe nipple - Tis nipple has a tiny length of its own pipe visible outside after installing the connection. This nipple typically has a hexagonal shape on the outer surface for easy management and change.

Close nipple - A close nipple is not visible outside once it is installed in its place. From the outside it looks as if the two pipes are just kept together. Nothing can be seen from the outside in specific. It is difficult to make any changes to this kind of nipples once they are installed because we don't find any pace of grip. We might either damage the pipe threads or the nipple male by trying to do so.

Brass Pipe Nipples

Brass has a special reference in all the plumbing fittings. Brass pipe nipples are made with a composition of 85% copper and 15% zinc with slight additions of other metals at times for special purposes.

The strength of the nipple is extremely important. When the pipe carries liquid at high pressure and temperature there is a huge amount of force at the junctions and they are the places where damage might occur. A brass pipe nipple guarantees the highest strength possible for any metallic nipple.

Rust and corrosion resistance is also a necessary feature of all the brass pipe nipples. Nipple junctions are sometimes prone to leakages. They are vulnerable to all sorts of physical pressures and can sometimes be the cause of pipe damage. So, using brass pipe nipples will ensure the corrosion free environment at these vulnerable places in the plumbing.

Brass pipe nipples are of high importance not only in house hold plumbing but also in the commercial plumbing where the carries may contain oils and fuels too. Brass being an inert material with respect to chemical reactiveness, is suitable for all sorts of needs.

Choose brass pipe nipples for your needs and make the best use of them.

Manufacturing Metal Parts And Fittings -Brass Vs. Stainless Steel

Use of brass is common in human civilization since ancient time while steel came much later. With time the quality and usage of the metal has improved significantly. Brass can be a highly durable metal if handled with care.

The use of brass fittings in automotive and agricultural industry has grown rapidly in the past few decades. Although there are twenty varieties of brass are produced by varying the percentage of copper and zinc as major ingredients, only six types of brass are used in fabricating various machine parts, tools, plumbing fixtures, and inserts.

Brass is extensively used especially in tools and machine parts where low friction is required, such as locks, door knobs, bearings, gears and so on.

Why The Automotive And Agricultural Industries Prefer Brass To Steel For Fittings And Parts?

Now, you might be wondering why manufacturers use brass when there is a harder and more durable metal like stainless steel is widely available. Well, there are a few key factors to consider.

Lower Manufacturing Cost With Brass

While raw material cost for both the alloys are almost same, it is the manufacturing cost that makes all the difference between the two. Brass is easier to mold than steel and it significantly lowers the manufacturing cost of automotive brass fittings and parts.

Better Thermal Conductivity

Assembling plastic components often requires threaded metal inserts to support and strengthen the joints. Brass being a better thermal conductor than stainless steel ensures faster heating and easier insertion into softer materials like thermoplastic.

Its rapid cooling property allows the plastic set quickly and thereby fixing the position of the brass insert accurately into the joint, which is not possible with stainless steel.

Higher Value Of Metal Scraps

Metal scraps are the byproducts of tools and machinery manufacturing process. Compared to stainless steel scraps brass scraps are sold at higher value and used in recycling. Nearly 90% of brass alloys are recycled. Therefore, it is evident that brass fittings are more cost-efficient than their stainless steel counterparts.

Industrial Applications Of Brass Fittings

While both brass and stainless steel are required for industrial applications, their reaction to various corrosive agents determines their usage. Relative softness of brass allows easy installation of brass fittings and components. However, brass has versatile usage across different industries.

  • Plumbing and sanitary fixtures - Brass is extremely reliable for hot and cold water systems. Hence, brass fittings are commonly used in joining water pipes in residential and commercial constructions.
  • Automobile parts - Brass is corrosion resistant to petroleum products. With nickel coating finish automotive brass fittings and plumbing fixtures can become further resistant to stains and corrosion.
  • Marine applications - When exposed to marine air for long time, brass component forms a protective patina on its surface, which makes it suitable for using in marine equipment to be used on board. Naval brasses, used in seawater, are produced by mixing tin with copper and zinc.
  • Electrical parts- Brass is used in electrical parts and wiring accessories like battery terminals, switchgears, transformers, and earthing system components, such as earth clamps and bars.
  • Musical instruments- Because of its acoustic properties brass is a popular choice for musical instrument manufacturers.

Are Brass Machine Screw Or Turned Products Significant For Manufacturing Units?

Machineries used by manufacturing factories need low abrasion and for these equipments, brass machine screw products are used by engineers. These turned parts are used in musical tools, like bells, horns, etc.

With the flexibility and acoustic properties, brass items attract people by their bright appearance, like a shining gold. Brass is exceptionally used in simply casting the fabrics as it is extremely flexible as compared to other parts like zinc and bronze. What next is its recyclable nature! Brass is not ferromagnetic and can be easily separated from ferrous /iron scraps by simply movement of controlling attractions.
