Use Of Brass Pipe Nipples In Plumbing And Piping

What Is Plumbing?

The word plumbing comes from the Latin word Plumbum for lead. This is because the first plumbing apparatus used during the Roman Era were made of lead. Plumbing is any system that is responsible for conveying fluids over large distances. This is done for a large number of applications.

Plumbing systems use pipes, valves, plumbing fixtures, tanks and other apparatus to convey fluids over large distances. Workers that work with plumbing fixtures such as boilermakers, plumbers and pipefitters are referred to as tradesmen. In the first world countries, plumbing infrastructure forms an important part of public health and sanitation.

What Is Piping?

The piping system is a network of interconnected pipes that help deliver fluids or gases from one location to the other. The piping engineering discipline gives information on the design and execution of an efficient piping system for the efficient transport of fluids (liquids and gases) from one location to the other.

In the piping system the main pipes are made from materials like wood, fiberglass, glass, copper, plastic, concrete, glass and steel. Brass is also used as a material for manufacturing brass pipe nipples. The associated fixtures known as fittings, which connect two or more main pipes typically, help sense and control the parameters like flow rate, temperature and pressure of the fluid.

How Is A Brass Pipe Nipple Used In Piping Schemes?

In the field of piping, a nipple is a fitting that is a short piece of pipe that is usually provided with a male pipe thread at each end, to connect two other pipes. The length of the nipple is equal to the overall length with the threads. A nipple has a hexagonal section in the center for wrench to grasp. This section is also referred to as the "hex nipple", At times; it may be made out of a short piece of pipe, which is sometimes referred to as barrel or pipe nipple. The overall length including the threads makes up the total length of a nipple.

A close nipple is something that has no unthreaded area when screwed tightly between two female pipes. In such circumstances, very little of the nipple stays exposed. A close nipple is usually unscrewed by holding one threaded side with a pipe wrench. This will most likely damage the threads and further necessitate replacing of the nipple. Here, we can also use a specialty tool called as a nipple wrench or an internal pipe wrench. This tends to grip the inside of the pipe and leaves the threads undamaged. When the ends of two different sizes meet within each other, it is called a reducer of unequal nipple.

Thus, we have seen the different forms in which a nipple can be installed into a piping system which transports fluids from one location to the other. Thus, a nipple is a very important fitting in a piping system. When a nipple is of brass, it is called as a brass pipe nipple.

Conclusion

Thus, it is amply clear now how a nipple is a very useful fitting in both a piping and plumbing system.
